After Action Report: 634th TD Battalion - September 1944 (Map-enabled, v1.0) Original Report Document (PDF)

About the Map... This map view is intended to provide easy and fairly accurate access to the map locations contained in the after-action reports (AAR).

As explained on the "Coordinates Translator" website, the automated conversion between the map grid reference system used during WWII and the system used today for tools like Google Maps introduces some small error, as much as 150 to 1000 meters depending on the location on the transformed coordinate. That's why you may occasionally see some strange map locations such as a reference to a road intersection whose marker is not placed precisely at that junction or a map marker that may be placed slightly offshore in a pond or lake. Also remember that the number of digits used for the map grid reference can affect location precision. For example, grid refs of six digits describe a 100 meters by 100 meters grid square; four-digit grid refs cover a 1000 meters by 1000 meters area. Those thoughts considered, you should find that the points you see on the map will probably be close enough to the actual AAR location to suffice for many research purposes.

As time permits, coordinate translations may be changed to reflect actual map reference positions, increasing the Google Maps location precision. To determine which coordinate transformaton method was used for a particular locaton, just hover the mouse over the map marker. If the map location was computed using the coordinate translator, you'll see the point labeled as "approx." If the Google Maps position was defined by comparing it to the map used to generate the AAR grid reference, the marker is labeled "map cross-ref."

As this site is intended as a starting point or supplement for research, users needing more precise geolocation for computed points will want to reference the corresponding map sheet used to annotate locations in the AAR.

Most of the map marker positions were computed from the after-action report coordinates using Thierry Arsicaud's "Coordinate Translator." His excellent utility transforms map coordinates from the Modified British System used by allied forces in the European Theater of Operations during World War II to decimal latitude/longitude values that may be used with various map tools.
